This chapter provides a concise overview of secondary education in the Republic of Croatia, its objectives, principles and types of secondary schools as well as their duration. An overview of the legal and regulatory framework governing secondary education is also given.

After completing compulsory primary education, students can continue their education in secondary schools. Secondary education enables the acquisition of knowledge and skills required for work and further education, however, it is not compulsory.

 

Pupil assessment

Methods and procedures for assessing pupils’ educational achievements in primary schools, as well as the elements of the assessment, are based on national and subject curricula, the teaching plan and program, the school curriculum and the Rulebook on Assessment Methods, Procedures and Elements in Primary and Secondary Schools (Official Gazette No. 112/2010), as well as on codes of conduct passed by schools.

Pre-Primary Education and Care of Children with Disabilities

Children with disabilities are included in the regular programme or the programme of public needs in the pre-primary education. Working programmes are carried out for children with disabilities from the age of 6 months to school age, by including children in educational groups with regular programme, educational groups with special programme and special institutions.
