Belgium - Flemish Community

The conditions for recognition are the same for all secondary schools. One of these conditions is "to adopt the educational structure established by decree". In this sense, there are no unusual variations or alternative structures in the Flemish education system in secondary education in the public sector.

Teacher Profession

Flanders is implementing various measures to address the teacher shortage, focusing on retaining teachers and attracting new ones by improving the profession’s social status and working conditions. Discussions with education providers and trade unions aim to identify effective strategies for recruiting and retaining skilled teachers and school leaders. Efforts are also being made to improve working conditions for the master's programme in primary education.

Academic bachelor programmes

Academically oriented bachelor programmes are programmes which follow upon secondary education or another bachelor programme (bachelor-after-bachelor). They put emphasis on a broad academic education or education in the arts. They are based on scientific research and aim at allowing the student to move on to a master programme or at granting him/her access to the labour market.

An Ambitious Curriculum in Primary Education

Flanders continues to develop ambitious and knowledge-rich attainment targets in primary education, with a focus on Dutch and mathematics, as well as STEM, personal development, and social skills (also see 14.2, school education).

This chapter provides a thematic and chronological overview of national reforms and policy developments since 2021.

The section on ongoing reforms and policy developments groups reforms in the following broad thematic areas that largely correspond to education levels: Early childhood education and care; School education; VET and Adult learning; Higher education; and Transversal skills and Employability. Inside each thematic area, reforms are organised chronologically. The most recent reforms are described first.
