Responsible bodies

The Directorate for Research, Lifelong Learning and Employability is the main public provider of adult education. Jobsplus, the national employment agency, the University of Malta and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology and other public and private institutions also provide adult education. The regulation and external quality assurance of adult education falls within the remit of the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA).  

Provision to raise achievement in basic skills 

The Lifelong Learning Unit within the Ministry for Education’s Directorate for Research, Lifelong Learning and Employability (DRLLE) provides programmes for persons who may not have obtained any formal qualifications and who are lacking basic literacy skills. These courses cover Maltese, English and numeracy literacy skills. Due to the importance of computer literacy a course for beginners is also being offered. 

University of Malta

Branches of study

The University of Malta offers MQF Level 5 and 6 programmes of study in a variety of areas of study. Information on these courses is available on the University website https://www.um.edu.mt/study/ 

The Short-Cycle programmes may lead to First-Cycle programmes.  First-cycle bachelor’s degrees vary in duration between three to four years depending on the specialisation and the area of study.

The educational system in the Republic of North Macedonia reflects the needs of the society for educational, scientific and permanent role of the education and science for the economic, social, technological and cultural development of the society as a whole. Consequently, the Ministry of Education and Science facilitates the continuous development of the system of education, moral education and science in the Republic of North Macedonia.

Two ministries bear the main responsibility for Luxembourg’s educational system:


Definition of the target groups

In Luxembourg, specific support measures are proposed for:

  • Pupils recently arrived in Luxembourg
  • Pupils with difficulties related to at least one of the official national languages (Luxembourgish, French, German)
  • Pupils with special educational needs.

This article will focus on measures for newly arrived pupils and learners who having difficulties with the national languages.

PhD programmes are conceived as the first step towards a research career in the industry or the academic world. They allow students to acquire advanced academic knowledge and skills.

Master programmes allow students to deepen their knowledge and give them access to research studies.

Branches of study

To obtain a master degree, students have to accomplish a programme of 60 to 120 ECTS credits. Added up with their bachelor/ previous diploma, the minimum number of ECTS credits has to be at least 300 (bachelor included).
