Types of post-university studies

The post-university programs offered by the Romanian educational system are:

  1. Post-Ph.D. programmes of advanced research (spanning at least one year) 

  2. Postgraduate training and professional development programmes

  3. Postgraduate training programmes.

1. Post-Ph.D. programmes of advanced research. Postdoctoral programmes can only be organised in doctoral schools accredited for the organisation of doctoral degree programmes or in research and development units, based on the research plan proposed by the postdoctoral researcher and approved by the host institution.

Admission to postdoctoral programmes is based on the methodology developed by the host institution, in accordance with the legislation in force.

2. Postgraduate training and professional development programme. Psostgraduate training and professional development programmes are aimed at updating/developing/upgrading one or more competencies or units of competence/competencies in one or more university qualifications or occupational standards related to an occupation that a university graduate can only practice.

They may be organised by accredited higher education institutions that have accredited at least bachelor's and master's degree programmes in the relevant scientific field.

Graduates with at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent are entitled to participate in postgraduate training and professional development programmes.

3. Postgraduate training programmes. Postgraduate training programmes are aimed at updating/developing/upgrading the skills of short-term university graduates who have yet to continue their studies to obtain a bachelor's degree.

They may be organised by accredited higher education institutions which have at least accredited bachelor's and master's degree programmes in the relevant scientific field.

Graduates with a short higher education diploma, a bachelor's degree, or equivalent are entitled to participate in postgraduate training programmes.

Both advanced postdoctoral and lifelong learning programmes can be organised according to ECTS.

Types of diplomas

On completion of the postdoctoral programmes, the postdoctoral researcher receives a postdoctoral certificate.

On completion of the postgraduate training and professional development programmes, the organising institution issues a certificate attesting to the professional competences specific to the programme.

On completion of postgraduate advanced training programmes, the organising institution issues a certificate of graduation.
