Slovakia: Integrating artificial intelligence in the education system

Education systems face a fundamental challenge: to prepare pupils and students for life and working in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) has become an everyday reality. With this in mind, the Ministry of Education introduced a new plan to integrate AI in schools and ensure it becomes a useful tool.

In September 2025, the Ministry of Education launched the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education Plan 2025–2027 (Plán zodpovedného využívania umelej inteligencie vo vzdelávaní 2025 – 2027). This plan embeds AI into the national education system. It also supports teachers and ensures equal access to technology for all schools, pupils, and students.

From the 2026/2027 school year, national education programmes will be updated to include AI, allowing primary and secondary schools to begin teaching it. Pupils will learn not only the principles of how AI works, but also how to use it effectively and responsibly.

The new plan is based on four principles – accessibility, equality, quality, and safety – and brings five main initiatives:

  • AI in schools: Preparing pupils and students for life with AI through education at primary and secondary levels, and through capacity building in higher education.

  • AI for all: Ensuring equal access to quality AI tools for all pupils, students, and teachers so that every school can manage this transformative challenge.

  • Support for teachers: Using AI to reduce administrative burdens, support adaptive learning, enable innovative teaching, and provide intelligent feedback to improve student motivation and outcomes.

  • Better education management: Using AI to modernize the governance of education, automate processes, and make more effective use of data to support policymaking, allocate resources more accurately, and improve support systems.

  • AI innovations: Creating a supportive environment for the development of education, research, and AI tools so that the education system remains sustainable, innovative, and ready to respond to technological changes.

The support for teaching and professional staff also constitutes an important part of the plan. It foresees the preparation of new methodologies, training programmes, and the use of AI tools that will make teachers’ work easier and enable personalized learning. Among some of the support measures of this plan, a space to share experiences and information will be available.

To strengthen higher education, the Ministry of Education will also support the establishment of Artificial Intelligence Competence Centres at selected public higher education institutions from 2026 to 2029. Their aim is to ensure the systematic development of AI in education, research, and institutional management, as well as to connect academia with practice and society.

The Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education Plan 2025–2027 will be funded through the state budget and European funds.
