Malta has launched a new Educator Wellbeing Strategy for public consultation, marking a significant step in strengthening support systems for educators and enhancing overall job satisfaction across the sector.

The strategy emerges from specific actions outlined in the National Education Strategy (NES) 2024–2030. Notably, Action 1.1.3 launches a dedicated wellbeing programme for educators. Action 1.1.5 establishes a Wellbeing Unit that provides professional, on-demand mental health support. This unit works through an integrated approach and complements  existing support structures within Malta’s public service.

It adopts a holistic definition of educator wellbeing. It does not focus solely on professional roles or teaching grades, but rather defines wellbeing as a state in which educators experience both life and job satisfaction. They feel a strong sense of belonging within their school communities and are able to flourish personally and professionally. The strategy also emphasises the importance of self-care, positive mental health, and a sense of purpose and ownership in one’s role.

The Wellbeing Unit’s mission is to position educator wellbeing as central to a thriving educational system, promoting a model that integrates multiple dimensions of wellbeing, often described through the “Wellness Wheel.” The unit aims to deliver support through a combination of outreach initiatives, tailored professional development opportunities and evidence-based practices.

The strategy’s vision extends beyond individual wellbeing to encompass systemic change. It envisages an education system where wellbeing is embedded across all levels, supported by strong leadership and a culture that prioritises the needs of educators. Among its intended outcomes are improved teaching practices, better student results, and increased capacity to attract and retain skilled professionals in the education sector. It also highlights the importance of personalised wellbeing pathways and measurable improvements in institutional and community wellbeing. The public consultation phase now provides stakeholders with the opportunity to contribute feedback before the strategy is finalised.
