Greece is moving forward with the establishment of 13 Innovation Centres, one in each Regional Directorate of Education, as part of a strategic investment in the digital and innovative transformation of primary and secondary education. The Centres begin operating in the 2025/2026 school year and function as regional hubs for educational innovation and skills development.

The Innovation Centres offer students and teachers the opportunity to participate in experiential workshops and education programmes that use cutting-edge technologies, such as robotics, extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI). Their activities aim to strengthen digital literacy, STEM skills, creativity, interdisciplinary learning and sustainability, contributing to the development of key competences for the 21st century.

The initiative is aligned with key European Union policy priorities, in particular the European Skills Agenda, which seeks to enhance digital, green and transversal skills, as well as with the objectives of the European Education Area (EEA). In this context, the Centres contribute to the improvement of quality and relevance in education, and the enhancing of equity and inclusion, while promoting innovation, cooperation and the exchange of good practices.

At the same time, the Innovation Centres support the development of a broader educational ecosystem, connecting schools with universities, research institutions, local communities and European education and innovation networks. Innovation Centres operate in modern, well-equipped facilities with highly qualified teachers

The Institute of Computer Technology and Press “Diophantus” in cooperation with the Institute of Educational Policy, is responsible for the pedagogical design and scientific evaluation of the Centres.

The initiative is part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, co-funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, supporting digital transformation, equity and innovation in full alignment with European priorities in education and skills.
