In light of the technological development in artificial intelligence (AI), the National Agency for Education and Quality has published recommendations for the use of generative AI in instruction in primary and lower secondary school.

The purpose of the recommendations is to encourage using generative AI to support learning and teach pupils to critically reflect on its use. The National Agency, under the Ministry of Children and Education, has published the following seven recommendations:

  1. Develop a unified framework for using generative AI
  2. Ensure solutions comply with current GDPR regulations
  3. Facilitate discussions among pedagogical staff about the technology’s opportunities and limits
  4. Focus on enhancing teachers’ knowledge, skills, and teaching competence
  5. Use generative AI only when it suits educational purposes
  6. Discuss with pupils when and how they can use generative AI in each subject
  7. Inform parents about the school's approach to generative AI.

These recommendations guide school heads, teachers, pedagogues, and school boards in initiating discussions on managing generative AI in teaching.

Currently, no national guidelines detail how to integrate generative AI into primary and lower secondary education. According to the Act on the Primary and Lower Secondary School (Folkeskoleloven), each school’s board is responsible for approving teaching resources.
