The CLÉ test (for “Calculer, Lire et Écrire”=Calculate, Read and Write) has been adopted by the government of the French Community on second reading. Its objective is to provide a snapshot of the basic skills that pupils should have acquired by the end of the 3rd year of primary education and, if necessary, to offer personalised support.

Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, the CLÉ test will be organized in all schools at the beginning of the 4th year of primary education. This common external assessment is non-certifying, as no diploma is awarded, and it is meant not to place any pressure on families or pupils. Moreover, no prior preparation is required.

The results of this tests will identify the acquisition of basic knowledge and, where this is lacking, give teachers the opportunity to re-explain the subject matter or explain it in a different way.

A pragmatic and personalised approach:
The newly approved test will provide teachers with a reliable tool for identifying knowledge and skills that have been fully acquired, partially mastered or not yet assimilated. The aim of this assessment is to identify any difficulties as early as possible, and avoid them to worsen over time.

This new non-certifying assessment aims to measure the mastery of fundamental knowledge at the end of the first three years of primary education, in order to quickly detect any difficulties and provide appropriate educational responses. In September 2026, all pupils in the 4th year of primary education will take this test for the first time.

The CLÉ test will replace the other non-certifying external assessments currently organised in the 3rd and 5th years of primary education. This reform will streamline testing, lightening the burden on schools while retaining a tool for steering the education system. Each school will receive a personalised report and, when appropriate, teaching suggestions will be offered to teachers.
