9.4Initial education for academic staff in higher education

Last update: 26 March 2024

There is no specific curriculum for the initial education of teachers in higher education. The majority of the recruited teachers and teacher-researchers have not followed specific courses during their curriculum to practice their teaching in higher education institutions. Their skills have been acquired during their PhD studies, their research or other related professional experiences.

However, training teachers in higher education and teacher-researchers is an essential dimension. To develop their training and their knowledge of learning processes, as well as their teaching and assessment practices, and also to encourage engineers and educational advisers in their teaching support missions, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research has supported the production and completion of the MOOC "Training to teach in higher education" since 2017. This MOOC focuses on designing teaching, supporting learning through activities, assessing student learning, and building a training programme as part of a teaching team. The MOOC runs for 12 weeks, and training and exchange activities may be added within institutions to cover the points presented in the MOOC.
