Short-cycle higher education

Bosnia and Herzegovina

7.2.First-cycle programmes

7.2.2Short-cycle higher education

Last update: 27 November 2023

Short-cycle higher education exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it is defined differently in each canton and Republika Srpska. The Law on Higher education in Republika Srpska defines short-cycle studies in the article 16 and states that these studies end with a certificate. The Law on Higher education in Canton Sarajevo on the other hand defines this kind of education as a professional study which lasts up to two academic years and ends with the acquisition of a professional title in a specific professional/scientific/artistic field. The ministries of these two regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina along with other ministries and universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina participate in the EU project PARTISH which aims to define the legal framework that will support the development and implementation of part-time (PT) studies and short cycle (SCHE) studies in higher education in BH, because there is no legislation for the EQF Level 5 in B&H.
