8.Teaching staff and other educational personnel

Last update: 13 January 2026

Initial education of staff

In the German-speaking Community of Belgium, only the initial training of preschool and primary school teachers is organised locally. These are short, non-university higher education programmes that lead to the award of a bachelor's degree. Teacher training for other educational levels must be completed at higher education institutions or universities outside the German-speaking Community.

Employment conditions of staff

With the exception of the pension system, which falls under federal jurisdiction, the Parliament and Government of the German-speaking Community are responsible for all employment conditions for teaching staff.

Continuing professional development

According to the decree of 31 August 1998, all teaching staff are required to participate regularly in professional training and development. Since 2010, the Autonome Hochschule Ostbelgien has been responsible for the organisation and implementation of teacher training and continuing education.
